Here are 8 reasons why I love the Wind Surf, the world’s largest sailing vessel … She is a sailing yacht, newly refurbished, not a monster ship.  She is intimate with an average 150 to 250 distinguished, affluent guests and truly a happy crew who will remember your name. The glorious food and wines – Official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, on par with Michelin star cuisines. It’s relaxing vibes in the lap of luxury. Polished yet casual and unpretentious. With 6 stunning masts, she is powered by the wind and stars to bring your you closer into each seemingly unreachable port as the megaships pass by.

GTL Deanna knows this ship and each port well. She’s over the moon to lead you on this one. You may have visited some of these places, but each port is worthy of return. Trip Itinerary

July 22

Fly USA to Venice

Depart USA to Venice. For cruising, always arrive a day ahead of sailing so you don’t miss the boat. Details to come in Trip Tips.

July 24

Venice Italy

Arrive early and get lost. That’s the only way to do Venice right. Sip a spritz on a tiny piazza, duck into a church and find a hidden masterpiece, and let the city’s magic work on you before we set sail at dusk. Windstar’s mooring spot puts the best of Venice within walking distance—no tourist mobs required. A time and place will be set up to meet an embark at the pier.

No other sea approach in the Adriatic raises goose bumps like Venice, a small ship exclusive where the entire city and its lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On your luxurious home-away-from-home, you arrive already equipped with a sense of what it’s like to live in the city that’s neither land nor water. Add your own sigh to the Bridge of Sighs, sip a spritz al bitter as you plot your agenda, and let the water taxis do your navigating unless you don’t mind getting lost. Not such a bad prospect, with serendipitous discoveries around every corner. Shore tours include a visit to the islands of Murano for its famous glass blowing or colorful Burano famous for the world’s fine as lace making, or you can do these on your own. After an AFS meet and greet, enjoy your first sail away party up on deck.

July 25

Rovinj, Croatia

Today, you’ll tour the lovely fishing port of Rovinj on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula bordered on three sides by the Adriatic Sea. You can tour the maze of cobblestone streets that lead to the hilltop St. Euphemia Cathedral with its towering steeple dominating the skyline. Old Town Rovinj is a delightful tangle of medieval streets and twisting stairways.

Seek out the Bronze Age ruins of Monkodonja, the hidden beaches or the breathtaking natural beauty of the 6-mile-long Lim Fjord. So much to explore a beautiful Istria. Visit charming Ham, world’s smallest town. Enjoy wine and olive oil tours. Lunch at a famous seaside resort or book the rib boat Sea Adventures for water thrills.

July 26

Split, Croatia

Split welcomes you with open arms, Mediterranean style, and a bustling harbor lined with busy cafés. Beyond, looms stately Diocletian’s Palace a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the center of town. Within the palace walls, a majestic cathedral soars, surrounded by polished marble streets lined with every type of tempting shop. If you’re longing for a quiet respite, head for the western end of town for an easy stroll through a verdant mountain park. Or take an optional tour to Trogir, another UNESCO site.

Roman ruins meet beach town cool. Split’s claim to fame is Diocletian’s Palace, a living, breathing ancient city packed with bars, boutiques, and open-air markets. Shop for lavender, sip local wine, or ferry out to the nearby islands if you’re feeling extra adventurous. In Split, everyone loves the history, art, flavors and aromas of Dalmatia. Optional tours include a trip to fabulous Krka National Park, tour Trogir UNESCO site, rafting the Catina river or a Sea Safari around Ciova Island.

July 27

Dubrovnik, Croatia

While larger ships must pass by, we anchor right beyond the famous walled city so you can admire its beauty with every glance. Tender ashore and step right into Old Town, a UNESCO site where no cars are allowed, just eons of history. Capture the exhilarating views on your camera — and in your memory. End your day at the Buza Café (if you can find it), watching bold divers leap off the cliffs into the crystalline sea.

We get a nearly full day here, and you’ll want every minute. Walk the ancient city walls, duck into Game of Thrones filming locations, and soak up the views of terracotta rooftops against impossibly blue water. In the evening, Dubrovnik glows—find a rooftop bar and watch the sun set over the Adriatic. One could spend weeks exploring historic Dubrovnik. Walk the high city walls for great panoramic photos. You may enhance your visit with kayaking along the coast, jet boating to Lokrum Island, wine tastings or the popular six hour in-depth essential Game of Thrones tour.

Tonight it’s a fine feast with the Captains Welcome Dinner.

July 28

Kotor, Montenegro

We enter another country today! Sailing into Kotor is like gliding into a storybook. The fjord-like bay is surrounded by mountains and medieval walls. Inside the old town: hidden squares, old churches, and cats galore. For the energetic, hike the fortress above town for epic photos—then reward yourself with a cold drink by the harbor. This is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays, and the approach offers one breathtaking fjord-like view after another. Just when you’ve reached your fill of blues and greens, the bright red rooftops of the medieval Old Town come into view. The entire area has been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The charming streets of Old Town remain car free, filled with 12th century Baroque palaces and Romanesque churches. For a fresh perspective, climb to the fortress on the hill for a breathtaking vista.

It’s easy to explore Old Town on foot or by cable cars. Tours include; Blue Cave cruise with Fisherman’s Village, ATV Safari into the Loveen Hills, the Baroque village of Perast. Or opt to head into the countryside to meet the wine makers in the Imperial Vineyards and taste the special cuisines of Montenegro.

This evening you’ll experience a spectacular barbecue feast under the stars like no other! Be sure to have your camera ready as the Wind Surf unfurles her sails to classical music

July 29

Day at Sea

A day at sea on the Wind Surf is a relaxing, luxurious experience, with moments of quiet contemplation or active water sports on the ship’s new Signature Water Platform, set against the backdrop of Compass Rose Bar with music soundtracks. Take time to organize your photos or enjoy treatments in the new spa. This is your day to take it up to disconnect from tours and fully embrace the yacht like sailing atmosphere

July 30

Giardini Naxos, Taormina Sicily

A slice of Sicily, with Mt. Etna looming in the background. Shop for ceramics, snack on cannoli, or take a cable car up for amazing views. Sicily is all about the senses: lemon groves, volcanic landscapes, and the best granita you’ll ever taste. Today you’ll discover one of Sicily’s jewels, the charming village of Giardini Naxos, nestled in one of the world’s most beautiful bays. An optional excursion to the popular hillside town of Taormina will be a highlight of your voyage — from the stunning setting of the iconic Greek Theater to the sparkling beaches along the Ionian Sea. Take a more adventurous tack and explore the UNESCO site of Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano.

The most popular options here are Mount Etna and its gorges. Or visit the famous Gambino Winery and enjoy the new “Godfather’s Footsteps” tour. Perhaps a pizza making class or Prosecco and snorkeling tour. By boat, you can whisk away to Isla Bella’s Blue Grotto and Messina. Or check out the trendy White Lotus tour offered here.

July 31

Sorrento, Italy

UNESCO World Heritage Sites abound in Sorrento, that is so easy to dsiscover on your own.  Explore the historic center of Marina Grande with its churches and lively squares.  Discover Sorrento through its gourmet cuisines and lemoncello tastings.  Visit a farm and learn about locally made lemoncello along with Italian cheeses.

Optional tours will take you to the archaeological areas of Pompeii and Torre Annunziata, or the 4th century B.C. city of Herculaneum. Perhaps your choice will be a boat ride to Positano, the legendary home of the Sirens. Perched on a terrace on the spectacular Amalfi Coast, Sorrento offers exceptional views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.  Cliffside Sorrento is the perfect base for exploring Capri, Pompeii, or just the legendary Amalfi Coast. Or stay local and stroll Sorrento’s old town, with its lemon-scented air and artisan shops. (So many choices this day, we recommend Mount Vesuvius Pompeii tour if you have not been here before or a boat trip to Capri with the famous Blue Grotto.)

Tonight, toast to la dolce vita as we sail toward our grand finale.

August 1

Rome (Civitavecchia) Italy

All roads (and all good things) lead to Rome. Disembark and head to the airport or dive into the Eternal City—whether it’s the Colosseum, Vatican, or just the world’s best gelato, you’ll find Rome’s magic everywhere.

I’m sure some of you will consider extending more time with a few days to explore glorious Rome with its endless iconic sites.  In this enchanting city, the past and present intersect in perfect harmony. Casually intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are the trappings of a modern metropolis: Skyscrapers, cafes, boutiques selling designer footwear. But of course what you seek first in the heart of Rome is its breathtaking history. A good place to begin is the Vatican, with its Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are just a few of those on display, any one of which is worth hours of contemplation. Then the ancient ruins—Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus. And of course the Trevi Fountain for the obligatory coins promising your return to the Eternal City.

Trip Prep:

  • Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
  • Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages.  Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now accept a digital copy from your email.
  • Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
  • All airline rules differ. It is imperative to read your airline’s rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure.

Fitness level –  Moderate walks and activities. It’s important to know your limits! AFS trips are generally soft adventures with moderate activity. Others can be extremely active. All tours involve walking, at times extensive and on uneven pavement.

As we get older, it’s easy to assume we can still do everything we used to, but travel often reveals when an activity is too demanding. If you feel you’d be more comfortable with a less strenuous trip, consider Eldertreks, which specializes in travel for older adults. Please remember that we cannot take responsibility for booking trips that exceed your physical abilities. For liability reasons, AFS reserves the right to remove any participant from a trip if we believe they are unable to safely keep up. Our trips are designed for everyone to have a great time. Out of respect for your fellow travelers, please choose an itinerary that matches your abilities so you can fully enjoy your experience.

General Air Info – Consider flying in early to ensure you’re there when the cruise embarks. Always download and use your airline’s app! Use the app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem, go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number. Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.

Many say they want to fly business class but don’t realize fares range from $4K to $9K. We do have two good contacts that can get sometimes get seats near half cost.  Email Ali at [email protected].

Group Air:  None.  Min 16 seats required, but people prefer doing their own air now. Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book, sometimes find better rates on their own, direct from their hometown.  This provides you with better flexibility to go early or extend at the trip’s end. I know we will not meet the minimum required to make a group booking since this is a small group.

Important Trip Air Dates:  July 22 – Aug 1, 2026.  Air is easy flying USA into Venice and out of Rome.

We urge you to fly in a day early so you don’t miss the boat! Example – USA to Venice July 22. Overnight July 23 considering airport hotels. Board the ship on the afternoon of July 24. Return home from Rome to USA on August 1. Get a late afternoon flight out. The ship docks at 8 AM, and it’s at least two hours to the airport +3 hours check-in time. All details will be coming in your cruise docs.

Many airlines to choose from.  American Airlines offers nonstop flights from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Philadelphia (PHL) to both Venice and Rome. United Airlines also serves both cities with nonstop flights from Newark (EWR) and Washington Dulles (IAD).  Delta Airlines flies directly to Rome from several U.S. hubs but doesn’t offer nonstop service to Venice; its flights to Venice usually go through Milan (MXP) instead.

Doing Own Air – We like Google Flights.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.  Stopovers are great to add on own.  If you need help air with the economy seat,  our guy Delhi can help; email [email protected] with your exact air dates, destination, passport name, and details with birthdate. Your trip leader will be collecting your air schedules three weeks prior to departure.

About Airport Transfers –  Due to the complexity of managing individual flight schedules and the varying arrival times, it’s not possible to provide a group transfer. We’ll collect everyone’s flight information through a form later so you can share rides. Cruiselines are slowly eliminating airport transfers. Deanna will give you tips later on Uber and taxis. Venice airport to the port is around 20 minutes. On return, from Civitavecchia Port to Rome airport, it is one hour by Uber or two hours by bus to train.

Meet Up With Group – On July 24, a time will be set to meet the group onboard for a briefing. More on this later.

Baggage – Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland. 1 carry-on bag & 1 medium suitcase not to exceed 45lb checked bag – weigh on a bathroom scale. Apple AirTags work great to track checked bags when the airline cannot, also good for carry-on. Leave space for great souvenirs. Be sure to attach ID inside and out of carry-on and checked bag.

Packing-  Google the weather in Rome a week before. Travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, Downy wrinkle spray, Apple AirTags, extra nylon bag to check laundry at home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get Global Entry.

For a nice sailing cruise ship in Italy, here’s a smart outfit suggestion for dining, along with a list of essential items, including chargers and adapters.

Attire  –  Windstar is totally casual but for dinner is on board they like smart casual. Details will be in your cruise docs.  For dinner, men should stick with a lightweight linen or cotton shirt in white or a soft pastel, paired with tailored chinos or smart shorts in classic shades like navy or beige. Loafers or boat shoes add polish, and a nice belt that matches your shoes pulls everything together. If the evening gets cool, throw on a lightweight blazer. Accessories like a wristwatch or a stylish bracelet can subtly elevate the look.  Women can’t go wrong with an elegant maxi dress or a tailored jumpsuit, finished with dressy sandals or flats. Bring a light cardigan or wrap for cooler evenings, and add a touch of personality with statement jewelry—think bold earrings or a standout necklace. A clutch or a small crossbody bag is perfect for carrying your essentials without weighing you down.

Don’t forget the basics you’ll need each day. Bring chargers for your phone, laptop, or tablet, plus a power bank for backup juice on the go. Since you’re in Italy, pack a universal travel adapter and any necessary EU plug converters to keep your devices powered. Headphones will come in handy, and a multi-socket adapter is smart if you’ve got a lot to charge at once. If you’re into photography, don’t forget your camera gear.

Finally, keep your travel wallet or organizer handy for important documents, and pack sunglasses and sunscreen for daytime exploring. A reusable water bottle will keep you hydrated, and a travel guidebook or app can help you discover all the best local spots.

Electric– EU & USA plugs onboard (hotels do not). Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug. AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out. All properties have hairdryers.  Plug Type F common European plug.  See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com

Money Matters – Always bring some cash, but you won’t need much.  You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $200 cash should suffice.    Change currency on arrival at airport, bank, or hotels or withdraw local currency from an ATM.  Amateur tourists may get currency in USA before they leave not knowing that they are losing at least 20%, no need for this. Note -independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering.

Master Card and Visa widely accepted.  Amex rarely accepted. Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases.  Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Some countries in Africa and Asia require new bills dated after 2016. Older bills not accepted when changing money.)

  • Currency Exchange Rate $1 = .88 Euro

Gratuities –  Gratuities for crew will be added to your final invoice when onboard when you settle your tab onboard. Discretionary tips help ensure a good relationship and the only thing we travelers leave behind is our reputation.  Suggested protocol is $16 per day.

Tipping on own  –  If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly. All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed.

Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room.  If you use a porter, please tip.

For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!

Communication – Internet is available on the ship. With smartphones, be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage for international phone plans before departure. Data Roaming rates can be expensive. To reach home – Texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging when using WIFI. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi without using VPN. Without VPN never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts on the Internet while abroad. Phone calls, text messages, and data usage of all kinds, it is crucial to understand that, unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, every use of your phone incurs a data toll. That means that viewing and downloading email, browsing the web, viewing social media, and mapping all incur data charges, as do applications that we sometimes assume to be “free,” such as Skype and WhatsApp. Unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, however, WhatsApp is using cellular data, so you are getting charged at your provider’s international roaming data rate.  Facebook Messenger Phone is an easy free way to make calls.

Safety –  Avoiding Hackers on Vacation. Thieves not only want your money but also your data. Change passwords often. Check device security settings before you leave for your trip. Back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data using a virtual VPN. Since 1989, your safety is our primary concern. Our local teams are experts, constantly monitoring any issues with your destinations. They can access real-time safety issues and will keep us informed if necessary.

Shore Excursions – Click here for a list of shore excursions.

Open link to view the list. Skip the private VIP ones. If you prefer a tour, you can call Windstar to book directly. Many AFSers like to do their own independent touring. See Suzy’s tips below.  Later, you can call Windstar at 877-737-6740. Group reference is 56461 then give them your reservation number.

All Inclusive Packages – this includes tips, Wi-Fi and drinks. Not much need for Wi-Fi as it is everywhere nowadays.

Drinks  –  nonalcoholic beverages complementary. Also, you’re allowed to bring three bottles of wine on board. Note $15 corking fee if you bring bottle to the dining room. You can purchase an alcohol drink package in advance, sometimes after you get your documents or just pay per drink on board. Deanna will brief you on what may be most conducive for you.

Amending tour pre-or post-trip. We honor your independent spirit, but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination.  If you add another country, we often see many AFSers on Facebook urging others to join them what do you consider the cost of tours, transport, hotels, etc.  Stopovers are great to add, but understand AFS has no responsibility for the quality of your trip. Please understand that we are a group tour organizer and do not have the time or resources sources to arrange private vacations for individuals.

Private Facebook Group Page  –  The benefit of the Private FB Group Page is that you have an opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers before departure and share trip photos during and after the tour.  The link can be found in your Wetravel welcome letter after your initial deposit.  (We found that some never read the Trip Tips jumping right to the Private FB Group Page assuming they will get all trip info needed. Often, they only receive rumors or misinformation. All important information is ALWAYS emailed to each participant and posted in Trip Tips under UPDATES. Nobody misses a thing.)

Emergency Contact – AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/    More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.

Cancellation Policy –  At Adventures For Solo Travelers (AFS), we understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may require you to cancel your tour. We have established the following cancellation policy to provide clarity and fairness to all our travelers; thus keeping in line with other tour operators and global suppliers today.  See website for details

Travel Insurance– While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation.  Best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com.  Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) covers most things but is expensive. Note that no company covers for fear.

Preexisting conditions  –  If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage. The trip cost can be amended or adjusted as needed after your initial purchase (eg. like adding an air ticket cost later). You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15 day period.  We like TravelSafe, Allianz or Seven Corners.

AFS Group Etiquette – When you’re happy, we’re happy.  Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups of travel lovers, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel. In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK:  Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.

Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit.  If you have a problem during a trip, talk to your trip leader.  If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience. Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude. Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness. Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.

AFS “How to have a perfect time in port or Suzy’s secret port tips revealed”

Cruises are a great value as an inclusive vacation but optional shore tours can cost a fortune if you’re not careful.  I do recommend doing a few ship tours, particularly to sites far from port or when the only way to gain access to a place is via the ship.

Here are some tips to make the best of your time and money.

  1. Decide in advance how you want to spend your hours in port. Do online research before departure on what you most want to see.  Google each city.  Find local events or public holidays when sites may be closed.  For private tours go to shoretrips.com
  2. At most ports, everybody is heading to the same famous sites. Hire a taxi outside the port fence,  Get several friends to join you.  Negotiate in advance a half day rate.  Use same taxi driver for drop off and pick up time by meter.
  3. Hire a private car and driver at local tour agency or hotel concierge. I do not recommend renting a car due to strict and different driving laws.  I do rent scooters often.
  4. Onboard, read the daily descriptions of the ship tours to get ideas of significant places you can visit independently.  Calculate the travel time from ship to site.  Ask the crew.  They know estimated times needed for transfers in and out at every port.  When the ship anchors, you either walk into town or ride small tenders.  Passengers who booked the ship tours are allowed off first to board the tenders.  Be patient.  You’ll have plenty of time to explore.
  5. Onshore, walk into city center. Use public transit options.  They are cheap, fast and authentic with locals.  Lonely Planet guidebooks have the best logistical information on bus, train and ferry schedules for each city.
  6. Sometimes a ship tour is greater value than doing it alone. For example, precision timing for visiting Egypt’s pyramids.  Port docks can be far away.  In Italy, it’s a 2 hour drive to Rome.  If a site is too challenging to get to or expensive to enter, book with the ship.
  7. Private AFS tours. Sometimes we can offer our own private group tours that are the same or more creative than the ship’s tour.  They are always less expensive, more fun and leads to group unity.  Cruiselines hate this.  Some will even penalize us with fines to prevent it.  If we offer one, please be discreet and follow disembarkation details form your trip leader.
  8. Don’t believe everything you’re told by the port lecturers on cruise ships. Sometimes they are being paid by stores or get kickbacks from entrance fees at ports.  Go listen, then determine if you can do sites on own.
  9. If you can afford it, feel free to book all shore excursions with the ship but beware. The guide may speak poor English or present store shopping may be included in your tour.  Whatever you choose, be smart, be bold and use every minute onshore to the fullest.

Join us in the land of the midnight sun! For the first time in 600 years, Iceland will be in the path of totality for this rare celestial event.

Mark your calendars and set a course for summer in Iceland on  a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as the Land of the Midnight Sun experiences a total solar eclipse. For the first time in 600 years, Iceland will be in the path of totality for this rare celestial event, and we have secured spots for you to have a front-row seat!

Even on a normal summer’s day, it’s easy to get lost in Iceland’s spectacular, otherworldly beauty. This is a place where the magical light under the midnight sun allows you to maximize your chance to enjoy nature shaped by stunning glaciers and volcanoes with untouched, scenic beauty. But on August 12, 2026, Iceland is the best place on earth to witness a total solar eclipse. Occurring between the tips of the Westfjords and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this is the only place on the globe offering a complete blockage of the sun’s light by the moon. Sun watchers from across the globe will be flocking here for this, and our guides will help us pick the ideal location to experience the full splendor of this mind-blowing event.

And if that alone is not enough, we’ll fill our sun-drenched days with spectacular sights like incredible waterfalls, bubbling hot springs, gleaming ice caps, dramatic fields, and a lunar-like lava landscape.

Enjoy thrills on both land and sea! Everyone loves our monster-sized Super Jeeps—highly modified vehicles with gigantic tires and incredible suspension systems to take us across Iceland’s unique terrain. We’ll enjoy a whale safari cruise filled with fascinating wildlife, including dolphins, puffins, and the rarest sea birds. The iconic Golden Circle day trip takes us to all the best Icelandic sites. Experience a thrilling lava show, and of course, the famous Blue Lagoon. And we’ll indulge in a foodie tour through Reykjavík and Icelandic dinners. So much fun packed in, but there’s some free time to enhance your visit with activities like zodiac rib boats in the harbor, riding the short Icelandic horses, or even snorkeling the Silfra Fissure.

If you have always dreamed of visiting Iceland or are eager to return, circle your dates for this one. We’ve sent dozens of groups to Iceland in the winter. Now we get to experience the summer vibe that comes alive with festive activities! We’ll start in Reykjavik and head south to those black sand beaches you’ve heard about. Iceland’s raw beauty is going to hit you hard, and this Nordic nation’s spirit? Untamed, for sure. Get ready for an adventure that’ll leave you with memories you can’t shake. This trip’s got it all, but that solar eclipse? It’s the cherry on the cake. Join us for six nights as we chase waterfalls, hike on volcanoes, and soak in geothermal pools.

Iceland is expected to be 2026’s top travel destination! We’ve had to keep this small because we had to get ahead of the growing awareness over the timing of the eclipse. This trip simply can’t be repeated because it truly is a once-in-your-lifetime event.

Arrival in Reykjavik

Welcome to Iceland! We touch down at Keflavik Airport and based on a large group arrival, we’ll have one transfer to our hotel, Reykjavik Lights by Keahotels. This stunning hotel is located near the popular Laugardalur Botanical Garden and Zoo and is the perfect place t call home for the next three nights. Everyone loves the vibrant capital of Reykjavík that is urban cool with a small town vibe. Only 120,000 inhabitants but a whirlwind of large fun with great museums, cafés, theaters, swimming pools, Viking history and nightlife.

This evening, we’ll meet for a briefing with our Gracious trip leader about what adventures lie ahead before heading to our Welcome. Dinner at Sjavargrillið. Sjavargrillið is a favorite for anyone visiting Reykjavik and we’ll enjoy a delicious three-course dinner featuring the best of Icelandic seafood cuisine. Evenings are still light outside when all locals come out to play. Great pubs with live music. I recommend you visit the incredible Perlon, a nature museum unlike any other. They have a great café and bar open until 9 PM. see www.perlon.is

August  11

Whale Watching / Reykjavik Foodie Scene

Fuel up with breakfast for a big day ahead! First up: a half-day whale watching adventure! We take to the sea in search of the minke whales, humpbacks, harbor porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins who call the waters around Iceland home. Don’t forget to keep your eyes on the skies for some of Iceland’s epic birdlife like the whimsical puffin. This is such a unique environment, and we’ll experience it first-hand.

At 5 PM we’ll dive into Reykjavik’s foodie scene with a 3-hour Food Lovers tour. This isn’t just about eating; it’s about experiencing the real flavors of Iceland and getting a feel for the city. We’ll hit up Reykjavik’s oldest restaurant, chill at a gastropub, and sample a ton of local dishes. Think hearty lamb soup, the iconic Icelandic lamb hot dog, creamy lobster soup, and a delicious Skyr dessert. Plus, we’ll get insider tips on where to eat, drink, and have fun for the rest of our time in Reykjavik. Our evening is free to explore some of those options.

Eclipse Day

Grab some breakfast at the hotel and get ready for something incredible! Today’s all about the total eclipse of the sun! This is the first total eclipse to be visible from Reykjavík since June 17, 1433! Picture this – you’re standing under the midnight sun, but the sun completely disappears for a surreal moment. Iceland is the closest point of maximum eclipse. The sparse population reduces light pollution to enhance our viewing experience.

We’ll have a coach at our disposal for the entire day as we chase the perfect view. We must be flexible. Our guides will brief us on the days plan and also provide options if free time allows.

The eclipse will take place in mid-afternoon, and Reykjavik will experience more than 2 minutes of totality for this amazing celestial event. This early, it’s tough to say where we will be directed for our viewing and exactly how long it’ll take to get around. The weather and local directives will play a big role in where we go and what we do. Plus, with so many people coming to see the eclipse, the roads could be a bit crazy. But don’t worry, the priority is making sure we have the best possible experience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Our evening is free to enjoy Reykjavik and relive our solar eclipse experience.

Golden Circle – Waterfalls, Greenhouses and Geysirs

After breakfast, I prepare for an epic day of scenic wonders. We head out for a full day of mind-blowing scenery on the legendary Golden Circle. This adventure offers Iceland’s greatest hits album: stunning landscapes, geysers shooting 100′ high that’ll make you jump, and waterfalls that you’ll see nowhere else. Rugged Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland was founded, will take your breath away. We’ll visit the Geyser area, the mighty Gullfoss Waterfall, which plunges 200 feet deep into volcanic craters, as well as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Get your best Insta photos ever here.  Basically, it’s an Icelandic must-do.

We’ll also get to visit Fridheimar, a greenhouse where they grow veggies year-round, even in the middle of winter! Plus, all of Iceland is geothermically heated and we’ll learn how they create a warm, sunny environment using geothermal heating. It’s pretty amazing to see how they make it all work.

Tonight, we’ll cozy up and stay right next to the incredible Skogafoss waterfall, which is near the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. The hotel’s right on the Ring Road, making it perfect for exploring South Iceland and hiking in the crazy landscapes shaped by fire and ice.

Overnight in Skogafoss Hotel (2 Nights) Please note our charming hotel is nestled in a delightfully remote area. To serve guests best, and to prepare fresh food, the chef will need to know our dinner choices. Carol will get all this with details a month out.

August 14

Off-road Super Jeep fun and Lava Show

We start our day with a 4-hour Hidden Mountain Super Jeep tour! These incredible GPS guided vehicles will take us off-roading across the rugged Icelandic terrain to explore the other worldly mountains around Vík. This unique experience is something that can only happen with these jeeps and local expert guides.

One of our adventures takes us down a road that used to be Route 1, until a flood (thanks, Katla volcano!) washed out the bridge. Along the way, we’ll venture into the mountains, explore caves, learn about “force stones,” and hike to a narrow canyon with a killer waterfall. We’ll need to dress warm and wear our hiking boots!

Then, get ready for the Icelandic Lava Show in Vík! This isn’t just any show – it’s a recreation of a volcano eruption, complete with molten lava (1100°C / 2000°F!) being poured into the showroom and over ice. It’s like actually being there as we see the lava flowing, hear it sizzling, and feel the intense heat. It’s an epic battle between fire and ice!

We’ll be back at the hotel in for a free evening.

Overnight at Skogafoss Hotel (2 nights)       B

August 15

Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik sights

After breakfast, we head back to Reykjavik, but not before a stop at Iceland’s world-renowned Blue Lagoon! This isn’t just a hot spring; it’s a geothermal wonderland. Created in 1976 by a nearby geothermal power plant. The waters of the Blue Lagoon are full of silica and minerals, and they emerge at a soothing 100°F (38°C). It’s the perfect place to relax and recharge after all those adventures. Don’t forget to slather on some of that silica mud – your skin will thank you!

In the afternoon, we’ll arrive back in Reykjavik and take a City Tour of the sights and learn about Reykjavik’s rich history and culture dating back to the time of the Vikings. See the stunning architecture like Hallgrimskirkja Church, Harper Concert Hall, the colorful old town and the harbor.

It’s time to toast our fellow travel lovers on a journey well done. Our farewell dinner includes amazing fresh local seafood at the Fiskfélagið (Fish Company). Get ready for some amazing seafood!

Trip Preparation

  • Read the latest “Heading Abroad with AFS,” especially if you’re new to AFS.
  • Make sure your passport is valid for 6 months after your return, with at least two blank visa pages. Take a photo or copy to store in the cloud. US embassies now accept digital copies if your passport is lost.
  • Download Mobile Passport to speed up US Customs—find it in your App Store.
  • Let your bank and credit card company know your travel dates so your cards aren’t blocked.
  • Every airline has different rules. Check your airline’s website before departure and always confirm your flight ahead of time.

Everyone stores travel info on their phone, but if you lose it, you’re out of luck. Always keep paper copies of key documents, including your airline tickets.

Visa Requirements

No visa required.

Fitness Level

Daily activities involve moderate walking. You should be able to walk a mile in 20 minutes. If you’re unsure about your fitness, text your name to 770-432-8225 to discuss. Know your limits—AFS trips are generally “soft adventures” but can be active, with walking (sometimes over uneven ground). As we age, we sometimes find activities more strenuous than expected, which can slow down the group.

If you prefer a less active trip, check out Eldertreks, which specializes in travel for older adults. We can’t be responsible if a trip exceeds your abilities. Please be considerate of the group’s experience.

Important Air Dates

Airline Information

AFS no longer usually offers group airfare, as most travelers prefer to book on their own. Group air requires a minimum of 16 people. Unless otherwise announced, please book your own flights.

Consider arriving a day early to avoid travel delays. Always download your airline’s app to manage bookings, check for delays, track your bags, and access your boarding pass. If you encounter flight issues, use your airline’s website “Contact Us” page, or reach out via text, social media, Skype, or their international phone number. Keep a digital copy of your ticket.

Premium credit cards can offer perks like lounge access, insurance, and more. For recommendations, visit www.tpg.com.

Business class fares can be pricey—$4,000–$9,000. For discounts, contact Alen ([email protected]), Ali ([email protected], 855-777-6336), or Britney ([email protected], 305-390-4132).

If booking your own airfare, we recommend Google Flights. Third-party sites like Expedia are easy for booking but difficult if problems arise. Book directly through the airline or use a travel agent. For help with economy tickets, email [email protected] with your dates, destination, passport name, and birthdate.

Direct Flights to Iceland

Several airlines now fly nonstop from the US to Keflavik (KEF):

  • Icelandair: Boston, New York (JFK, Newark, Stewart), Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Detroit
  • United: Newark and Chicago
  • Delta: Atlanta and other major hubs
  • Virgin Atlantic: Los Angeles
  • Alaska Airlines: Daily summer service from Seattle (starting May 28, 2026, through September)

Airport Transfers

We may offer a group airport pickup based on the majority’s arrival times (minimum 10 people). If you arrive at a different time, take a taxi or rideshare to the hotel. You can also use www.jayride.com or Welcome Pickups. Private meet-and-greet transfers are possible but expensive.

With travelers arriving and departing at different times, we can’t coordinate airport transfers for everyone. Transfers are your responsibility unless group air is arranged. Check your arrival airport’s website for transfer options (bus, taxi, Uber, etc.). Connect with fellow travelers on the group Facebook page to share transfer costs.

Reykjavík Lights Hotel doesn’t have its own shuttle, but getting there is easy. Shared bus services like Flybus and Airport Direct (Gray Line Iceland) connect with all flights. Flybus goes to BSÍ Bus Terminal downtown (about 45 minutes); Flybus+ offers a minibus transfer to your hotel for a small fee. Airport Direct can also drop you at your hotel (sometimes not directly, due to local rules). Book online and schedule pickup an hour after landing to allow for customs.

For more convenience or larger groups, private transfers are available (Airport Shuttle Iceland is one option). Prices start around €40 for shared rides and go up for private vehicles. Taxis are about €200. Uber does not operate in Iceland.

Group Meetup

On August 10, you’ll meet the group at the hotel for a briefing.

AUG 10 – Arrival in Reykjavik

Baggage

Pack light! Bring one carry-on and one medium suitcase (checked bag should not exceed 45 lbs). Use a bathroom scale to check weight. Apple AirTags are great for tracking your luggage. Leave space for souvenirs. Attach ID tags inside and outside your bags. Portable chargers must be packed in your carry-on, not checked bag.

Packing Tips

Check the weather a week before you leave—it’s usually mid-50s in August, with possible drizzle and plenty of daylight.

For Reykjavík in August, pack a waterproof jacket, a warm sweater or fleece, a couple of shirts (one long-sleeve, one short-sleeve), comfortable jeans or walking shoes, and thermal layers if you get cold easily. Don’t forget a lightweight hat, gloves, travel umbrella, sunglasses, swimsuit (for geothermal pools), reusable water bottle, toiletries, plug adapter, medications, and chargers.

See “Packing 101” in Heading Abroad with AFS.

AFSers’ travel hacks: Pack a spare outfit in your carry-on, use Liquid IV for hydration, packing cubes, Downy wrinkle spray, an extra nylon bag for laundry, US dollars for tips, charged travel banks, and Global Entry.

Electricity

Bring a Type F adapter (2 or 3 prongs). You only need an adapter, not a converter, for phones and tablets. Double-check you’ve packed all cords and chargers before checkout. All hotels have hairdryers. For more info, visit https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com.

Money Matters

Bring about $200 in cash for tips, meals, and shopping. Exchange currency at the airport, bank, hotel, or ATM. Use airport or bank ATMs to avoid skimming scams. Shield your PIN. Bring new bills.

MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted; Amex is not. Credit cards are safer than debit cards and many offer no foreign transaction fees. Always pay in local currency for the best rate.

$1 = 128 ISK (Icelandic Krona). Download an app to check exchange rates while shopping.

Gratuities

$90 is included in your invoice for daily distribution by your trip leader. This covers tips for guides, drivers, porters, and staff, based on industry standards. If service is exceptional, feel free to tip more. For group meals, please leave $2 for waitstaff.

Communication

Wi-Fi is available. Check with your phone provider for international plan rates. Using your carrier’s roaming plan is often the easiest and most affordable data option.

To contact home, use texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger over Wi-Fi. Keep your phone in airplane mode to avoid roaming charges. Use VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi and avoid opening attachments or logging into sensitive accounts.

Remember: unless you’re on Wi-Fi, all phone usage—including WhatsApp and Skype—uses data and incurs roaming charges.

Safety

Your safety has always been our top priority. Our local teams monitor conditions at your destination and can access real-time updates. In an emergency, your guide is available to help.

Protect Your Data

Thieves can target your personal information. Change passwords often, check your devices’ security settings, and use a VPN to back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data before traveling.

Photography

Always ask before taking photos of locals. Share your best group photos on the AFS Private Facebook Group Page—shots with people, locals, children, animals, or iconic sites are especially welcome.

Useful Websites

For Reykjavík visitor information: visitreykjavik.is

Food in Iceland

Icelandic cuisine includes classics like Lamb Soup (Kjötsúpa), Pylsur (Icelandic hot dogs), fresh fish, Skyr (a thick, high-protein dairy product), Rúgbrauð (rye bread), and desserts like Kleinur (twisted doughnuts).

Accommodations

Our itinerary includes links to each hotel; changes are rare.

Roommates

Single supplements are expensive and not always available. Save by sharing a room—most travelers are only in their rooms to sleep. If the group’s gender balance means someone must take a single room, we’ll offer it to everyone. If all decline, the extra cost will be split or you can find a friend or take a full refund. Costs vary.

Seasoned travelers often bring headsets to block noise. Remember: kindness goes a long way with roommates.

Free Time

For suggestions, ask our local guides—they know best. Many newer travelers try to pre-plan every detail, but often the best experiences are spontaneous. Our daily itineraries are full but there will be some free time. Use Google Maps to explore.

Extending Your Trip

We encourage adding days at the end of your trip, once you’re acclimated. If you add another country, you might find other AFSers on Facebook organizing their own extensions. Remember, AFS can’t take responsibility for independent travel arrangements. For personal trips, try services like Viator.

Private Facebook Group Page

The Private FB Group lets you connect with fellow travelers, share photos, and get updates. The link is in your WeTravel welcome letter. Always rely on Trip Tips and direct emails for official info—don’t depend solely on the FB group for updates.

Emergency Contacts

For emergencies, call or text AFS at 770-432-8225 or email here. More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2–3 weeks before departure.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is optional but highly recommended. For coverage, visit www.insuremytrip.com. “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) policies offer more coverage, but cost more. No policy covers cancellation due to fear.

If you have preexisting conditions, purchase insurance within 15 days of your initial deposit for full coverage. You can adjust your plan later if needed (e.g., to add airfare). Insurance can be bought later, but coverage may be limited. We recommend TravelSafe or Allianz.

AFS Group Etiquette

Travel with an open mind, flexibility, and a sense of adventure. Unexpected changes can lead to the best experiences, so go with the flow. Respect local traditions and be curious about new cultures. Smile—kindness is universal. Our goal is to experience new places, make friends, take memorable photos, and return home with stories worth sharing.

Please note that AFS is politically nonpartisan. With our homogeneous groups, we all want to focus on the common denominator: our love of travel.  In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK:  Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.

Please be advised that the operation of some tours may need to be rearranged or modified to suit local conditions, but all activities stated will be included.   Now more than ever before, travelers value the privilege of travel to explore our world. You’ve been waiting so long, it’s time for recess!

“The best spirit of an explorer requires the openness of a child.” – Suzy

Some trips are about ticking boxes. This one’s about stories you’ll still be telling years from now.

From the moment you land in the Emerald Isle, this journey sweeps you into the heart of Ireland and Scotland—two places where old legends and everyday life still mingle in the air. Over eight days, you’ll wander castle corridors, stroll seaside cliffs, and share laughs with locals over homemade scones and strong cups of tea. Our past AFS groups loved this. (I thought everyone had been there, but you asked for it. Heck, I’ve been there dozens of times and still discover new wonders.) Dreamy Ireland, land of shamrocks in 1000 shades of green in springtime.

It all starts with a warm welcome at Dublin Airport and an instant dive into Irish history at EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum. From there, it’s two nights of luxury at Kilronan Castle, where you’ll taste the slow pace of country life. Delight in the Atlantic Sheepdogs showing their talents. You’ll wind along the coast to the wild Cliffs of Moher, enjoy Blarney Castle and Gardens in Killarney, lose yourself in the music and markets of Ennis, and sample the elegance of afternoon tea at Dromoland Castle. Cork offers a taste of Ireland’s food scene and its storied past, while stops at the Rock of Cashel and Newbridge Silverware add even more color to your path back to Dublin.

But the adventure doesn’t end there. Scotland’s vibrant and edgy capital calls. Edinburgh blends the old with the new along cobblestone streets, castle views, and that unmistakable sense of history around every corner. You’ll have time to wander, shop, and soak it all in before gathering for a farewell dinner that celebrates everything you’ve seen.

What makes this trip different isn’t just the castles, the cliffs, or the chance to kiss the Blarney Stone. It’s the feeling of stepping into another era. It’s waking up to mist over an ancient lake, hearing a street bagpiper play a tune you’ll never forget, and discovering that afternoon tea can be a full-blown event.

You’ll find that the real treasures aren’t just in the sights, but in the small moments—quiet morning walks on castle grounds, the hum of a pub in full swing, or the shared laughter over something lost in translation. This trip is about slowing down and letting each place sink in, so you return home with more than souvenirs— perhaps some new friends and favorite stories to tell. Welcome to a journey where every day feels like a postcard, and every memory is yours to keep.

Adventures for Solo Travelers by Suzy Davis

Imagine the curious eyes of an adorable melon-headed Beluga whale surfacing right up to greet you, as if communicating, “Welcome to the Beluga capital of the world, my friend!”

… or listening to singing from “mommy’s darlings”, the Beluga calves. This is what adventure dreams are made of. Our past groups loved visiting Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, in winter. Now we visit the polar bears’ habitat in the summer, along with plenty of other unique marine life at sea and wildlife on land. This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime connection with nature.

With 60,000 belugas filling Hudson Bay and polar bears leaving the melting sea ice, summer is an amazing time to visit Churchill! On our 7-day adventure, experienced naturalist guides will take you to wild places that offer the best opportunities to see polar bears, belugas, Arctic silhouettes, seals, over 200 nesting or migrating bird species, and more.

We head into Hudson Bay aboard our new Canadian Coast Guard, Arctic Ocean-certified vessel, the Matonabee. Onboard together, we explore one of the more remote polar bear viewing areas. You may see the bears swimming or sunbathing on the shore. Weather permitting, we may have the privilege of walking where the polar bears roam. Look for ptarmigan, Arctic fox, sika deer, and marine birds.

Along the shoreline, hundreds of Beluga whales come to feed, mate, and give birth in the warm, shallow coastal waters. Our Beluga boat tour will focus on viewing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat in the Churchill River and into the Hudson Bay as they feed on schools of Arctic char and Brook Trout. Beluga Aqua Gliding (TM), and kayaking with the whales are available as optional activities to get up close and personal with these magnificent marine mammals, as well as dog sledding on wheels. Then we’ll go ashore for a walking tour of the historic Prince of Wales Fort.

Enjoy the Churchill Heritage Tour that takes you into the surrounding area to explore various historic sites. These include Cape Merry of the “polar bear jail”, the wreckage of the famous ghost Ithica shipwreck, and many other sites that make Churchill the town it is today.

At the trip’s end, experience our summer Tundra Tour in the extraordinary Arctic Crawler™ to view the stunning subarctic landscape. These are the same vehicles for the winter tours. After a delectable dinner, you may catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the summer skies.  It’s a short season of just July and August here when the locals love to celebrate.

This isn’t your average summer getaway. It’s a deep dive into the raw beauty of Canada’s north, where the air is crisp, the locals friendly, and the landscapes are almost impossible to describe. Pack your sense of wonder. We’ll take care of the rest.  Our private AFS Arctic vacation is based on 20 participants. This  Holy Grail tour is Big adventure and Large fun with ultimate thrills for our AFS  Explorers to indulge in ultimate wonders.

More About Churchill

Churchill is famous for its Beluga Whales and Polar Bears.  ‍The sociable and fun-loving Beluga visit the area in the thousands in July and August. These majestic white mammals are not only beautiful but are known as “sea canaries” for their musical chirps, clicks, and whirs—and they can mimic other sounds too! Plus, they are friendly and curious and will even try to swim up to boats to check out the action. Come on up to Churchill this summer and see for yourself!‍And, of course, there are the Polar Bears. These unique white bears live on sea ice and come to the coast in summer to rest or take a dip in the chilly waters to cool themselves off. In fall, they gather together on the shore eagerly waiting for the sea ice to form so they can return home. It’s worth a trip to Churchill to visit these amazing creatures by boat in summer or on the tundra in fall.‍Other unique northern animals can also be seen in the Churchill area, like Arctic Hares, Snowshoe Hares, Arctic Foxes and Moose. While rare, the area even has some bats, mink (ermine) and lynx, among others.  If you love birds, spring and summer are the ideal time to visit the Great White North–in fact, the Arctic is known around the world as a “birders’ paradise” with over 225 species in the region.  ‍From June to September, you can see species like gulls, ducks, loons and falcons. Just a few of the many varieties include, among others: Long-tailed Ducks, Common Eiders, Pacific and Red-Throated Loons, Ross’s and Bonaparte’s Gulls, and Little Gulls, Gyrfalcons (the largest in the world), and Merlin falcons. Many of nature’s aviators are even named after the North like Tundra Swans, Northern Shrike, Lapland Longspurs, and Hudsonian Godwit. And in the fall, you can also observe Willow Ptarmigans, Snowy Owls and Snow Geese.

Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, is a top location to view the many species of exotic arctic wildlife. Lazy Bear Expeditions offers tundra expeditions and Hudson Bay coastal tours in summer or fall, which give you a chance not only to meet the Belugas and the Bears but also to see the many other animal and bird habitats of the Great White North.

Trip Tips are designed to answer trip-related questions. It’s your responsibility to read this information. Updates and addenda will be posted here. Some travelers have lost their entire trip for not reading what we send on visas, air details, inoculations, etc. Check back from time to time.

Payment –  We partner with WeTravel for secure, fee-free electronic check payments. Simply follow their instructions. Credit card payments incur a processing fee. Alternatively, you can pay by check without mailing it: make it out to AFS, take a photo, and text it to 770-432-8225. We’ll process the payment at no extra charge.

  • 50% of FINAL DUE JAN 15, 2026  & FINAL PAYMENT DUE MAR 31   Wetravel is our data management company, it allows you to pay by check electronically but their bank stated to charge a 1% fee. To pay without a fee, write a check to AFS, and mail to 3709 Mapleshade Drive SW, Gainesville, GA 30504.
  •  Credit cards are still assessed a processing fee at the time of purchase.  2.9% for Visa and MC and 3.9% for Amex.

Trip Prep:

  • Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
  • Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages.  Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now except a digital copy from your email.
  • Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
  • All airline rules differ. It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure

Fitness level – Moderate walks and activities daily.   You should be able to walk one mile in 20 minutes.

Know your limits! Please be respectful of your fellow AFS Travelers and consider choosing an itinerary that is conducive to your needs so you can thoroughly enjoy your trip!

If you have concerns, text your name at 770-432-8225 to discuss. AFS trips are generally soft adventures with moderate activity. Our trips are large fun and can be active.

All tours involve walking, at times extensive with uneven pavement. As we age, we think we can do what we used to do but discover on the trip an activity is too strenuous and are slowing down the entire group.

(If you think you need something tamer, check out  Eldertreks – they specialize in trips for older folks. We cannot be responsible for booking a trip beyond your skill level and physical stamina. AFS is all about having a good time.)

General Air Info – Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins. Always download and use your airline’s app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number. Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.

Many say they want to fly business class but don’t realize fare range from $4K to $9K. We do have two good contacts that can get sometimes get seats near half cost.  Email Ali at [email protected].

Group Air –  None.  Min 16 seats required, but people prefer doing own air now.  Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book sometimes find better rates on own direct from hometown. This provides you better flexibility to go early or extend at trip end. I know we will not meet the minimum required to make a group booking since this is a small group.

Important Trip Air Dates:  JULY 14  official beginning of tour – JULY 20 end of services.   Fly in July 13 or 14.

Air is easy round-trip USA to Winnipeg Canada  – Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG). Dozens of airlines fly USA to Winnipeg. Consider United, American, Alaska, Air Canada and more. Many flights fly via Chicago or Minneapolis.

Doing Own Air –  We like Google Flights … Put Winnipeg in your fare alerts!  Let others in your group know what you were doing on your private Facebook page.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.  Stopovers are great to add on own.  If you need help air with the economy seat,  our guy Delhi can help; email [email protected] with your exact air dates, destination, passport name, and details with birthdate. Your trip leader will be collecting you’re air schedules three weeks prior to departure.

About Airport Transfers – We may offer one common group airport transfer based on majority of flight arrival times if we meet a minimum number people arriving the same time. Due to the complexity of managing individual flight schedules, and with people arriving on different days and times it’s impossible to provide a group transfer. We’ll collect everyone’s flight information through a form, arrival transfers will only be available if we have a minimum of 10 people arriving at similar times.

AFS can always arrange a private airport transfer for you. Travelers arriving outside this group transfer windows will need to arrange their own transportation to the hotel via taxi or Uber. This shift aligns with current industry standards, as most major tour companies have already moved to having travelers arrange their own arrival transfers. Like our industry peers, we’ve found this to be the most practical solution for everyone involved. Rest assured, we will still provide a return transfer to the airport on the final day of the tour. As we get closer to the departure date, we’ll send you a form to collect your exact flight details, which we’ll need for coordinating both potential arrival transfers and your guaranteed departure transfer.

Meet Up With Group – On July 14, a time will be set to meet the group at the hotel for a briefing. More on this later.

One week out – Google weather in Churchill a week prior departure – should be in the 64° for a high and a low of 50°.

This is a simple trip to pack for with casual summer clothes to layer

Lazy Bear Lodge’s Must Have List

  • T-shirts and shorts for the summer weather days
  • Loose fitting clothing, long socks, closed-toed shoes and a long-sleeved shirt and pants for cooler days
  • Wind breaker/sweatshirt/fall jacket for possible cool days, waterproof jacket and pants
  • Small waterproof bag or dry bag (to bring your items on the zodiac/boat)
  • Hiking shoes or runners
  • Thermal underclothing, a toque (a close-fitting hat covering your ears), mittens or gloves for the tours
  • Good shade hat, sun glasses, binoculars, camera
  • It is wise to bring a good bug spray that contains DEET as a main ingredient
  • Spare batteries for each camera type you bring
  • Charging cords for laptops, cell phones, tablets.
  • We also recommend bringing along a small carry-on bag with your absolute necessities just in case your luggage makes it to Churchill after you do

Electric – Same as USA.  Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. The property has hairdryers.

Money Matters – Always bring some cash!

  • Currency Exchange Rate  $1 = 1.40 CAD

Gratuities – please note that you need to bring $95 in cash in denominations of five and $10 to give to your GTL Salanda on day one. She will disperse gratuities as required throughout. Unlike other trips, on this one we are not collecting in advance. Discretionary tips help ensure a good relationship and the only thing we travelers leave behind is our reputation.

Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly.  All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room.  If you use a porter, please tip.  For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff.

Communication –  Internet is available.

Photography –  Before taking pictures of locals, know it is polite to ask. Your AFS Private Facebook Group Page is a great way to share your best shots with each other. AFS loves photos with group participants (not typical churches, monuments, or any shot that looks like you pulled it off of the net, etc.) for our website. The best photos are ones that include a group member with a local, children, animals, or at iconic sites in the same frame!

Roommates – Single supplements have significantly increased in price– if available at all. Save money and buy yourself an awesome local gift. We all live alone, but save money when traveling by rooming together. Suzy spends a lot of time on roommate matching.  99% of our clients are wonderful and you’re only in your room to sleep at night. The best option is to invite a friend.  Note, kindness begets kindness. Many of our seasoned travelers bring headsets to drown out any excess noise. We share rooms only to sleep at night.  Please understand if the AFS room list ends up with unbalanced gender, and forces a single room, we will offer it to all in group. If all decline, we split the added forced cost single room. If you were the last to book we may have to remove you from the trip unless you share in the supplement cost.

Optionals – We will offer two optional tours for you. Full details will be sent, and we’ll get a headcount later. 1. Kayaking with whales, 200 Canadian, around $140 US or 2.  Beluga Aqua Gliding at 260 Canadian, around $185 US

Amending tour pre-or post-trip – We honor your independent spirit, but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination.

Emergency Contact –AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/  More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure.

Travel Insurance – While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation.  Best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com. CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) covers most things but expensive.  Note that no company covers for fear.

  • Preexisting conditions – If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage.
  • Click here to Purchase Travel Insurance online

AFS Group Etiquette –When you’re happy, we’re happy. Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur.

  • Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups of travel lovers, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel.

Ireland & Scotland:
Castles, Cliffs, and Celtic Charms

A Storybook Journey through Ireland and Scotland where Legends Come Alive

CHECK AVAILABILITY

April 18

Fly USA to Dublin

There is an easy round-trip USA to Dublin. There are plenty of airlines to choose; Aer Lingus, AA, UA, BA, DL and more. You may want to add a stopover city enroute or arrive in Dublin earlier. Flight details.

April 19

Dublin – Roscommon, Kilronan Castle

Welcome to the Emerald aisle! Everyone will be arriving on different flights, times and dates. Our Guide will meet us at the airport around 12 noon for one common group pick up. Exact time will be given a month out when we collect all of your air schedules. I know most are arriving on Delta at 8:35 AM. From the airport, we board our coach and transfer downtown to the Epic. After the tour we travel two hours to Kilronan.

The guide will give a briefing and then start your adventure at EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum—a lively, interactive space that brings to life the journeys and stories of Irish people who’ve set out across vthe world. Afterwards, settle in for two nights at Kilronan Castle Estate & Spa. This 18th-century castle, tucked away in County Roscommon and surrounded by 50 acres of tranquil woodland on the edge of Lough Meelagh, is the perfect spot to recharge and soak up real Irish luxury. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner at the castle tonight, and you’re free to unwind as you wish for the rest of the evening.

April 20

Roscommon, Ennis, Cliff of Moher

Another hearty Irish breakfast kicks off the day. In County Clare our first stop: The Doolin Ferry Co., for an unforgettable Cliffs of Moher boat cruise. Towering 700 feet above the Atlantic, these legendary cliffs have inspired artists and writers for generations and are a haven for seabirds. Walk the famous scenic cliffs for your best Instagram moment.

Later, continue to Ennis and check in at the Old Ground Hotel. Historic Ennis is a charming town that blends history, music, and local flavor—explore historic sites like Quin Abbey and Ennis Friary, discover local heritage at the Clare Museum, or catch traditional Irish music at Glor. Don’t miss the Ennis Farmer’s Market and the unique local shops. Dinner and your evening are at your own pace. There are a lot of little alleys filled with great pubs with a vibrant traditional music scene, like Paddy Quinn and Lucas’s Bar.

AFS Trip Tips Ireland – Scotland

Prepared to be thrilled by our journey through history, heritage, and breathtaking landscapes on our epic UK adventure. Each day is packed with wonders. We have a wonderful group of 30 travel lovers and our top guides to lead you. I know all but two of you, and I’m confident this will be one fun bunch. Some of you have even joined our past trips here, but there’s always more to explore. We’ll be sending you emails with updates right up until departure.

Trip Tips are designed to answer questions about trips. It’s your responsibility to read this information. Updates and addenda will be posted here. Some travelers have lost their entire trip for not reading what we send on visas, air details, inoculations, etc. Check back from time to time.

Important Air Dates

APR 18 or sooner into Dublin to APR 26 out of Edinburgh. Land starts April 19.

UK Visa

Ireland needs no preparation, but Scotland is part of the UK, and new rules require an ETA even if you are just passing through the airport en route to another country. This is like a pre-approved visa done online. Approval is quick. Print a copy. At USA check-in, the airline will be asking to see your ETA number on your phone or in print.

Go to www.gov.uk/ETA (have your passport and credit card ready).

I just did one as I’ll be there in May, and it was pretty easy. Take a photo of your passport data page. Then it will ask for a photo of the inside back page, which accesses the chip icon.

Payment dates

Secondary was submitted Nov 10 – FINAL PAYMENT DUE JAN 10

We use We Travel to securely manage payments and booking information. Just follow the steps on the form to complete your payment.

Paying by credit card? There’s a small processing fee: 2.9% for Visa or MasterCard, and 3.9% for American Express. Please note, there’s now a 1% fee for electronic check payments, since our processor recently updated their policies to match the banks.

Prefer free? Just mail a paper check to AFS at 1907 Daniel Green Court, Smyrna, GA 30080.  One quick favor: be sure to note the country on the memo line —it helps us keep everything organized. Thanks!

Your fearless GTL

(Gracious Trip Leader, not a guide but a liaison between our guides and group to ensure things run smoothly).

Ready for a journey that changes you? With Carol as your guide, every adventure is unforgettable.

Trip Prep

  • Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
  • Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages.  Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now accept a digital copy from your email.
  • To speed through US Customs download Mobile Passport. Look in your App Store for details.
  • Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
  • All airline rules differ. It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure.

General Air Notes

We rarely offer group air now, as we have savvy travelers who like doing their own. In the past, people expressed interest, and we would make a group booking, but then they found better rates and canceled air. Minimum 16 needed.  Given the small size of group and lack of interest participants must now book their own air unless we present otherwise.

Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins. Always download and use your airlines app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem, go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number.  Be sure to have a copy of your ticket on your phone.

Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.

Many say they want to fly business class now, but don’t realize fares range from $4K to $9K. We do have two good contacts that can get these seats at nearly half cost. [email protected] or [email protected]  855-777-6336 …. [email protected] 305-390-4132

 Air

Land starts April 19.  Dozens of airlines fly into Dublin and out of Edinburgh. Check out American, Delta, united, British, Aer Lingus and more.

Fly into Dublin April 18 or earlier. Most affordable gateways from USA or Newark, Boston and JFK. On departure, fly from Edinburgh home on April 26.

Stop overs are great to add.   (If it is your first time to Ireland, we suggest you go in early.  Visit the incredible Book of Kells in Trinity College library, the old Guinness factory, National Gallery, famous Abbey, Theatre, Saint Patrick’s or Christchurch Cathedral’s. Great walks are on Merrion Square for Georgian architecture, O’Connell Street and along Dun Pier.  Best live music at night can be found at the Cobblestone, the Ploughboys,  Johnny Foxes, Eamon Durrands in  the temple bar entertainment district. For foodies, visit Queen of Tarts, Murphy’s ice cream, Mulligan‘s and Gruel. )

We also like Google Flights.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from the airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.

Airport Transfers

April 19, around 12 noon, we will have one common group pickup at the airport where the guide will meet us. Exact time given a month out when we collect all your different air schedules.

After a briefing, you will be transferred to the Epic Museum and then to the hotel.

Please understand with travelers arriving and departing on different days and times, it is insurmountable to manage more than one group transfer. Group air airport transfers are based on set time. Without group air, there can no longer be any pick-ups or drop-offs.  Unfortunately, now like other tour companies, transfers are your responsibility. We’ve spent weeks each trip making spreadsheets of each person’s air to send to the supplier and then flights change. We then hire a guide, driver and pay airport parking fees. Last year in groups only half showed up as guides waited hours looking for others. Sometimes, no AFSers showed up without informing us.)

Transfers are not expensive. First, Google your arrival airport website to see transfer tab. Suggestions to appear like airport bus, taxi details, Uber and more. Then connect on group Facebook page to set up sharing transfer costs if you like.  If you go early and check-in AFS hotel before group arrives, it’s your responsibility to change rooms with your roommate if necessary day one when trip begins.)

Internal Group Flight

April 24, we fly Aer Lingus from Dublin to Edinburgh 10 AM to 11:15 AM.  We were just advised that we must ticket you by December 10 to secure your seat and this fare! If not, price will only go up. In order to keep the group together, everyone must be on this flight that we reserved for you. Price including taxes is $195 and the ticket is nonrefundable. This will be added to everyone’s invoice and it’s due upon receipt.

Meet Up With Group

On day 1 on April 19 – a time will be set to meet the group at the hotel for a briefing. More on this later.

Baggage

Please note in both Ireland and Scotland now, one piece of standard size suitcase is included in the cargo of the tour coaches.

Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland. You change hotel properties several times. Do not pack a portable charging battery in your checked bag! Keep this in your carry-on.

Packing

Google weather a week prior departure.

This trip is so easy and casual throughout. Simply pack spring/summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights.

Most important things: Comfy walking shoes, umbrella, swimsuit for spa, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, plug adaptor (Type G, same as UK), cell charger, small daypack. Read Packing 101 in Heading Abroad with AFS

Cool travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, downy wrinkle spray, extra nylon bag to check laundry home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get Global Entry.

Electric– Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug. AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out. All properties have hairdryers.  See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com

Type G Rectangular 3 prongs. Same plug used through throughout the United Kingdom.

Money Matters – Always bring some cash!

  • You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $200 cash should suffice.
  • Bring newer bills 2016 on as some countries won’t take old or slightly damaged bills.
  • Change currency on arrival at the airport, bank, or hotels, or withdraw local currency from an ATM.  Note: Independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering.
  • Master Card and Visa are widely accepted. Amex rarely accepted. Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases.  Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Always choose to pay in local currency for the most favorable rate!
  • Follow the link below to create a conversion cheat sheet https://www.oanda.com/currency/travel-exchange-rates

Pre-paid Gratuities

$90 included in your invoice. This is for ease of distribution each day from your trip leader.  We hired the top ground team. It’s protocol to tip our guides, assistants, drivers, porters, staff, lodges, and more for each group abroad. Our tips are based on industry standards.

Discretionary tips help insure a good relationship and the only thing we travelers leave behind is our reputation. Our web platform We travel shows all trip prices.

Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room.  If you use a porter, please tip.  For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!

Communication

Internet is widely available. With smartphones, be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage for international phone plans before departure. Data Roaming rates can be expensive. The most affordable and convenient way to get data on your cell phone is using an E-SIM or your carrier’s plan for international roaming.

To reach home – Texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging when using WIFI. Keep your phone in airplane mode to prevent roaming charges. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi without using VPN. Without a VPN, never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts on the Internet while abroad.

Unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, however, WhatsApp uses cellular data, so you are getting charged at your provider’s international roaming data rate.  Facebook Messenger Phone is an easy, free way to make calls.

Safety

At AFS, the safety of our Travelers is our priority since our inception in 1989. Our local teams constantly monitor any issues with your destination. They can access real-time safety updates and inform us if necessary.  For any real emergency, your guide can assist you in contacting anyone.

Avoiding Hackers on Vacation.  Thieves not only want your money but also your data.    Change passwords often. Check device security settings before you leave for your trip. Back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data using a virtual VPN.

Photography

Before taking pictures of locals, know it is polite to ask.

Your AFS Private Facebook Group Page is a great way to share your best shots with each other. AFS loves photos with group participants (not typical churches, monuments, or any shot that looks like you pulled it off the net, etc.) for our website. The best photos are ones that include a group member with a local, children, animals, or at iconic sites in the same frame! Note, there may be some restrictions with photos in religious sites. The Guide will advise.

Chewing

Ireland and Scotland offer a rich culinary heritage that reflects their historical and cultural influences. Traditional Irish food includes hearty dishes like Irish stew, made with lamb or beef, potatoes, and vegetables, as well as soda bread and colcannon, a comforting mix of mashed potatoes and cabbage.

Meanwhile, Scotland is known for haggis, a savory pudding made from sheep’s offal, oats, and spices, often served with neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes). Both regions emphasize fresh, local ingredients, resulting in comforting fare like fish and chips, smoked salmon, and a variety of dairy products. Overall, the cuisine celebrates simplicity and robust flavors, often accompanied by the famous local beverages, such as whiskey and stout.

Accommodations

Our itinerary has links to each hotel.  Hotels can change, but it’s rare.

Roommates

Single supplements have significantly increased in price – if available at all. Save money and buy yourself an awesome local gift. We all live alone but save money when traveling by rooming together.

Leisure Time

For your free time, it’s best to arrive and ask our local expert guides for suggestions. We notice many newer clients pre-plan many activities on the AFS trip well before they arrive, often with disappointing results. Our daily itineraries are pretty full, but there will be some free time. Expert travelers revel in the element of surprise in a new destination and allow the wind to blow them where it will. Use Google Maps on your phone to find everything nearby.

Amending tour pre-or post-trip

We honor your independent spirit, but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination. If you add another country, we often see many AFSers on Facebook urging others to join them. We think it is wonderful but understand AFS has no responsibility for these portions of your trip.

Private Facebook Group Page

The benefit of the Private FB Group Page is that you have an opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers before departure and share trip photos during and after the tour.  The link can be found in your We Travel welcome letter after your initial deposit.

(We found that some never read the Trip Tips jumping right to the Private FB Group Page assuming they will get all the trip info needed. Often, they only receive rumors or misinformation. All important information is ALWAYS emailed to each participant and posted in Trip Tips under UPDATES. Nobody should miss a thing.)

Emergency Contact

AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/. More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure.

Travel Insurance

While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation. Best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com.   CFAR or cancel for any reason covers much but, it is expensive.  Note that no company covers for fear.

Preexisting conditions – If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage.  The trip cost can be amended or adjusted as needed after your initial purchase (e.g., adding an air ticket cost later). You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15-day period.  We like TravelSafe, or Allianz

Thanks!

AFS Group Etiquette

Prepare for your departure joyfully!  Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude, and adventuresome spirit. If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience.  Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude.  Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness, and kindness always begets kindness.  Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, take great photos, have a lot of fun, and return home safely with memories worth remembering.

2026 – Ireland & Scotland

Ireland & Scotland:
Castles, Cliffs, and Celtic Charms

A Storybook Journey through Ireland and Scotland where Legends Come Alive

Some trips are about ticking boxes. This one was about stories that will still be told years from now.
